Stuffed Rice flour balls with lentils ( Dal-pitha)

Dal pitha is a traditionally food of Bihar, India. This is something which we are eating from our childhood. There are always few memories which you never forget from your childhood. It's from
one of these wonderful memories.

I remember, my mom working in morning 3-4 hours continuously, to make this dish for afternoon. And then, she is tired, and will sleep after lunch for a hour. When she goes off to sleep, we siblings, act as a bunch of chicken, who are tied in a cage, and they are set free suddenly. We do all mischievous works in this 1 hour. And, when our mom is awake, we act as if we did nothing, except study.

So, one day, I was all set to go in the store, and was waiting for mom to sleep. After she went to her room, I tiptoed to the Kitchen, and straight went where the sugar containers are stored. I use to love eating sugar. Oh, I can never forget that moment, when I was looking at the open full container of sugar, and the door behind me got closed. Initially, I thought it is because of the wind, but then I realized," NO, all the outside doors are closed, so there is no wind inside the house". I tried opening the door, but couldn't. Imagine a situation, of a small 10 year old girl, whose mother has told her not to eat sugar, and she is locked inside a Kitchen, with the open container of sugar, which she even didn't know how to close. So, after few minutes, my mom opened the door. My mother didn't say a word to me that day, but I stopped eating only sugar from that day.

I never gave it a thought of how it is made, until I got married. Few things, which I got to know about Dal-Pitha is it is made in the peak winter season. In our household, 2 or 3 types of pithas are made at the same time. It takes about 2-3 hours to make. And when you make this Pitha, with more helping hands, the process of making Pitha becomes a fun.

Here, is the recipe of making the Pitha.

Ingredients -
  1. Chana Dal (soaked for 30 minutes) - 2 handful
  2. Cumin Seeds - 1tsp
  3. Hing - 1pinch
  4. Salt to taste
  5. Ghee - 1 tbsp
  6. Turmeric Powder  - 1tsp
  7. Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp
  8. Garam Masala- 1tsp
  9. Rice Flour - 3 cups
  10. Water as required
Directions -
  • Boil Chana Dal as usual, with salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and garam masala.
  • In a pan, add ghee, when heated add cumin seeds, hing and then boiled dal. Stir continuously, so that all water of Dal is dried up, leaving behind dry Dal powder.
  • Now, in another Pan, fill 2 glasses of water.
  • Boil the water, close the flame, and slowly add rice flour in the water, continously stirring.
  • Transfer the flour in another bowl, and let it cool a bit for 5-7 minutes.
  • Now, by adding little amount of cold water, make a dough not to tight nor to soft.
  • Knead the dough for minimum 5 minutes, to get a right texture. (More you knead, more soft Pitha will be).
  • Take dough equal to the size of peach, make an impression in center and convert it in a shape of small bowl. Fill the Dal Mixture, and close the mouth of dough, by pressing it with both hands.
  • Apply 2 drops of Oil in both the palms, and press the dough ball from both sides, and give it a shape, you want for your Pitha. I like Oval Shape, so i made it in this form.
  • Now, in another pan, fill enough water, so that all pithas can get dipped in it.
  • Boil the water, add pithas in it, and let it get cooked for a while.
  • When the Pithas, will be done, it will start floating on the top of the pan.
  • Enjoy it hot with Alu-Dum.

Spicy Crispy Masala mirch

A friend is one with whom you are comfortable, to whom you are loyal, through whom you are blessed, and for whom you are grateful. This quote is by William Arthur Ward  , but it actually applies to me and I am glad, that I am blessed with enough friends around me, who makes me feel special and needed every single day. 
This recipe is for those Spicy people who just cannot live without Spices in their lives. I have some of friends, who love spices, but believe me without them my life would have been replica of a winter tree, which has no leaves and is standing alone. I am very thankful to God, for sending those amazing friends to me.
This Masala Mirch is an amazing side dish, which goes with rice as well as chapati. My hubby is very much found of Chillies. But, excess consumption of red Chillies results in Stomach problems, like gastric, heat and ulcers, etc. So, to avoid excess use of Red Chillies, I made this "Spicy Crispy Masala Mirch".
So, here is the recipe of Spicy Crispy Masala Mirch for you guys. Enjoy this amazing side dish with any Main Course of your choice. 
Ingredients - 
  1. Green fat Chillis - 15-16 
  2.  Hing  - 1 pinch
  3. Panch Poran - 1tsp
  4. Mustard Oil - 1tbsp
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Chilli Powder - 1/4 tsp
  7. Saunf -  1tbsp
  8. Rice floor - 1tbsp
  9. Aamchur Powder - 1tsp
  10. Lime Juice - 1tbsp
  11. Sugar - 1/2 tsp
Directions - 
  • Heat mustard oil, add hing and panch phoran. Add chopped green fat chillies (moti mirchis). 
  • Add salt, chilli powder , saunf powder. Sauté on high heat. 
  • Add rice flour and cook. Squeeze lime juice and add little Aamchur powder. 
  • Add sugar, and Cover to cook till the rice flour is cooked. 
  • Keep stirring and let it all dry up. 
  • Chatpati (spicy) chilli  is ready to serve.

Banana Bread


It's being too hot outside. These are the days of cold fruit smoothies. When we talk about fruit, not every fruit is kids favorite except one and that is banana. This fruit seems to be favorite fruit for most of the family members. Lots of people think banana can only provide us fat. Well, I will say there are more other benefits of banana which should be considered first. Some of them are listed below-


  1. Reduces depression.
  2. Regulate the Bowel system.
  3. Reduce blood pressure and heart of disease.
  4. Help our bones grow stronger.
  5. Help individuals to quit smoking.
  6. Help prevent anemia.
  7. Provide us with energy.
  8. Reduce menstrual pain.
  9. Power our brain.
  10. Help prevent ulcers.
There are many varieties of ways in which we can include banana to our diet everyday. Fruit Custard, Banana Smoothie, Malpua, Banana Bread, etc. Banana bread tempt me most, and I love it most. Last time I made it, it didn't came out well. It tasted too good, but it was very dense. I have a problem, if food doesn't look good, I cannot eat it. So, it was very difficult for me to consume it. So, this time I was much careful while making this bread. And I am real happy, when it came out so good. And believe me, it tastes as wonderful as it looks.

Ingredients -
  1. Banana - 2 Ripe Bananas
  2. All Purpose flour - 2 1/4 cups
  3. Milk powder - 1 cup
  4. Sugar - 1 cup
  5. Baking powder - 1tsp
  6. Baking Soda - 1/2 tsp
  7. Cooking Oil/ melted unsalted butter- 1cup
  8. Pinch of salt
  9. Honey - 1tbsp
  10. Cinnamon  Powder - 1/4 tsp
  11. Nutmeg Powder - 1/4 tsp
  12. Whipped Cream- 3-4 tbsp
  13. Milk - 1/2 cup 
  14. Almonds - 1/2 cup (broken)

Directions - 

  • In a bowl, mix all purpose flour with baking powder, baking soda, milk powder and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix oil with sugar, stir and dissolve all crystals of sugar.
  • Add mashed banana in the sugar mixture with cinnamon powder and nutmeg powder, mix and make banana completely dissolved.
  • Add flour mixture to oil mixture slowly and keep on stirring to mix  flour.
  • Add milk and mix so that no flour lumps in the batter.
  • Add almonds and stir.
  • Transfer the batter in a loaf pan.
  • Bake it for 35-40 minutes at 350 degree F.
  • Check after 30 minutes.
  • Insert toothpick in the center on cake to see whether it's done or not.
  • Cook it for another 5 minutes. Repeat the process of toothpick.
